"The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong
is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to
get at or repair."
Douglas Adams, (1952 - 2001) from " Mostly Harmless"

PMP Application Requirements - Additional Information

When looking for 'hours', remember the five 'domains' or process groups apply to each phase of a project as well as to the overall project. And, the bulk of hours spent by candidates on project work would normally be attributable to the executing and controlling process groups.

Candidates are required to indicate the number of hours spent performing the tasks listed below, for each project included in their PMP application. The eligibility requirement as approved by the PMI Corporate Governance Council, state that candidates do not need to have experience leading and directing across all domain areas on one project but must, in the total number of hours submitted, demonstrate that they have led and directed some of the specified tasks in each domain area. It is not necessary to have hours allocated against every task, just against some of the tasks in each domain.

The PMP Application will require you to demonstrate

( at least one task in each domain )

Tasks Conduct Project Selection Methods

The 'Professional Responsibility' Domain does not appear on the application form as this is considered to be an over arching responsibility applicable to all of the actions of a project manager directing and leading teams. The basis of this element of the examination is the PMI Code of Ethics [ View PMI Code of Ethics ]. The Professional and Social Responsibility tasks are:-

To complete your application for each project listed you will need to:-

  • Document your project management performance. Candidates will be required to document experience in performing specific tasks needed to effectively lead and direct projects as part of the application process (refer table above). You can count hours from all of the projects you have worked on in the last 8 years (counting back from the date of your application).

  • Provide project contact information. Applicants will be required to provide contact information for each project that is submitted as part of the application. During the application evaluation review period and if an application is selected for audit, PMI will contact the manager(s) indicated on the application to validate the documented experience.

The total number of hours worked on projects 1, 2 and 3 performing the tasks outlined in the table above count towards the required total of 4,500 (or 7,500) required to be eligible for the PMP exam. However, the months of February and March can only be counted once towards the required total of 36 (or 60) non-overlapping months of project management experience. The 'months of experience' require you to be working on a project for some of the time within the month (not necessarily full time).

Project Management Training - PMP

The required training hours may be accrued by successfully completing courses, workshops and/or training sessions provided by; tertiary institutions (eg as part of a degree course), PMI Registered Education Providers (PMI-REP), other training companies, consultants, PMI Chapters and/or your employer. Both classroom based and distance education courses are acceptable (but not PMI Chapter meetings or self-directed training). Courses offered by Mosaic and other R.E.P.s [ see more on PMI Registered Education Providers] are pre-approved by PMI for the designated Contact Hours. The eligibility of contact hours from other training sources are the responsibility of the PMP candidate and will be determined on a case-by-case basis through the application audit process.

Your training must include content from all nine of the PMBOK ‘Knowledge Areas’: -

  1. Integration: The processes required to ensure that the various elements of the project are properly coordinated
  2. Scope: The processes required to ensure that the project includes all the work required, and only the work required, to complete the project successfully.
  3. Time: The processes required to ensure timely completion of the project.
  4. Cost: The processes required to ensure that the project is completed within the approved budget.
  5. Quality: The processes required to ensure that the project will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken.
  6. Human Resources: The processes required to make the most effective use of the people involved with the project.
  7. Communications: The processes required to ensure timely and appropriate generation, collection, dissemination, storage, and ultimate disposition of project information.
  8. Risk: The processes concerned with identifying, analysing, and responding to project risk.
  9. Procurement: The processes required to acquire goods and services from outside the performing organization.

General Application Requirements - PMP

  • Evaluation process. All applications submitted go through an enhanced review process. Applications will normally be approved within 5 working days.
    • Initially your application is reviewed for completeness; the web based forms check you numbers add up, then a clerical review ensures your descriptions of the work performed meet PMP requirements (ie you describe the directing and leading of team members to produce project deliverables).
    • After passing the review you are asked to log back onto the system and pay your fees
    • Your application will either be approved and an examination number issued or selected for audit.

  • Audit selection. PMI audits a significant percentage of Certification applications; most audits are selected randomly but PMI also reserves the right to manually select specific applications for audit. It's best to assume that your application will be audited. During the audit process, PMI requires formal verification of all information you have provided, from your nominated employer(s), project referees, training organisations and schools. This is a very formal process designed to maintain quality in the Certification Program. If incorrect information is found during the audit process, you will have your Certification or eligibility revoked.

  • Instant audit notification. Applicants selected for audit will be notified electronically. Automated follow-up reminder notifications will be issued to candidates electronically throughout the audit process. On successful completion of the audit your examination number is issued.

  • One-year eligibility period. All candidates will be given one year to take the examination. This one-year eligibility period begins when a candidate's application is approved.

  • Booking your exam. The examination number allows you to book into an examination. You re-log onto the PMI website to make the booking via a link to the Thomson Prometric organisation's website (Prometric are responsible for the delivery of all PMI examinations world wide).
    • Paper based examinations (PBT) have specific lead times - see [ http://www.pmi.org/PBT/PBT_Handbook.pdf ].
    • Computer based examinations (CBT) are available at secure Thomson Prometric centres world-wide. Subject to availability; you choose the centre, date and time of the examination to suit your requirements. The minimum lead time needed to book a CBT after receipt of your examination number is around 1 week.
