Course Objective

Mosaic's PMP exam prep courses are based on the PMBOK and start from $1200 + GST for our Mentored Email™ course, and are focused on achieving a first time pass. The examination for the PMI PMP credential covers a defined knowledge base, not just the PMBOK Guide (although this is the basis of the qualification / exam*). Our courses for the PMP certification exam cover the full spectrum of project management knowledge needed to succeed in the PMP exam based on the PMP Exam Specification. The key difference between our courses is the way you choose to study for your PMP certification exam, not the course content. All of Mosaic's PMP study materials have been developed by PMP certified trainers and include plenty of practice dealing with the PMP question format and a PMP sample test. Trainees' scores from our PMP practice test give a good indication of their likely performance in the PMP exam. We guarantee to keep working with you until you pass the examination (see our blog on guarantees).

All of Mosaic's PMP courses are pre-approved by PMI as delivering appropriate course contents and 35 Hrs of training

Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire the necessary knowledge and understanding required to successfully pass their PMP examination.

Mosaic's PMP certification course is specifically designed to equip trainees with the necessary skills and knowledge to pass a difficult, multi-choice examination, most people also acquire significant useful project management knowledge to apply in the workplace. The course framework is based on the PMBOK Guide, key references from the PMI list of recommended reading materials and the student's own pre-existing knowledge and experience.

Key Deliverables

The course will:

PMP Exam Structure

The PMP exam consists of 200 questions made up of 175 'live' questions and 25 pre-test questions. The pre-test questions are scattered randomly throughout the exam and do not influence your score (they are there to validate the question for use in future exams). However, you have no way of knowing which questions are pre-test and which are 'live' and need to deal with all 200 questions in the same way! The current pass mark is 61%, this is an overall score from the 175 'live' questions (106 correct) there are no minimum requirements in each domain. PMP Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the PMP examination you must demonstrate the following requirements:

Requirements – Category 1 - (Hold a baccalaureate degree or equivalent - the subject does not matter) PMP
Experience 'directing and leading' project teams 4,500 Hrs
Number of unique months of non-overlapping project management experience 36 Months
Allowable timeframe for accumulating experience, prior to date of application 3 to 8 years
Formal, project management specific training contact hours (prior to application) 35 Hrs

Requirements – Category 2 - (Hold a high school diploma or equivalent) PMP
Experience 'directing and leading' project teams 7,500 Hrs
Number of unique months of non-overlapping project management experience 60 Months
Allowable timeframe for accumulating experience, prior to date of application 5 to 8 years
Formal project management specific training contact hours (prior to application) 35 Hrs
Headline Issues
  • Do not over apply - the application is a threshold process. There is absolutely no benefit in having more than the specified minimums.  Round out the last project or training that crosses the threshold and STOP!

  • Every item entered in you application must be fully documented if you are audited.  If you enter 10,000 hours of experience and fail to document 500 you will fail the audit.

  • Make 100% sure you can contact all of your referees. PMI do not like to accept substitute referees without very powerful extenuating circumstances.

  • PDUs are completely different to the hours of eligible training needed for a credential. For more on this see: PDUs and the PMI Examination Eligibility Requirements

  • Nothing is uploaded when you apply for a credential. The documents are only needed if you are audited.

  • Your experience needs to be 'real':
    • You do not need hours against every line item only those that you worked on.
    • You do not need hours against every domain in every project, PMI's requirements are that overall you have at least 1 hour from one project in each domain.
The details

The supporting documentation/information required by a candidate before applying for the examination is: -

  • Educational background (degree or diploma or equivalent for Category 1)

  • Experience verification form(s) meeting the requirements above + managers to verify the time claimed for each project listed.
  • Proof of having successfully completed the required number of contact hours of project management education.
    • Any project management training is acceptable provided it covers the 9 knowledge areas from the PMBOK but you must have certificates to prove you attended the course and details of the course content.
    • If you require Mosaic's certificate to make up the 35 Hrs do not apply until the completion of the course - Mosaic's training is pre-approved by PMI for the 35 Hrs - if you are using our certificate you do not need any other training.

  • Potential candidates must also agree to abide by the PMI Code of Ethics [ View PMI Code of Ethics ]

Your experience verification forms must identify hours against some of the specified tasks in each of the five ‘domains’ within a projects life cycle (but there are no minimum requirements):

  • Initiating processes: Recognizing that a project or phase should begin and committing to do so (10%).
  • Planning processes: Devising and maintaining a workable scheme to accomplish the business need that the project was undertaken to address (20%).
  • Executing processes: Coordinating people and other resources to carry out the plan (30%).
  • Controlling processes: Ensuring that project objectives are met by monitoring and measuring progress and taking corrective action when necessary (30%).
  • Closing processes: Formalising acceptance of the project or phase and bringing it to an orderly end (10%).
[ For more information on counting hours, domains and tasks, click here ]

PMI reviews and/or audits all Certification applications. During the audit process, PMI requires formal verification of all information you have provided, by your employer(s) and schools. This is a very formal process designed to maintain quality in the Certification Program. If incorrect information is found during the audit process, you will have your Certification or eligibility revoked.

PMP training courses offered by Mosaic and other R.E.P.s [ see more on PMI Registered Education Providers] are pre-approved by PMI for the designated Contact Hours in fulfilment of your PMP eligibility requirements. The eligibility of contact hours from other training sources are the responsibility of the PMP candidate and will be determined on a case-by-case basis through the application audit process.

If you are not a PMI member and intend joining; complete your PMI application first, receive your membership # and then apply for the PMP exam.

The Application Process

Exam Flow

The first step in the application process requires completing the on-line (or paper based*) application forms, Mosaic's free PMP spreadsheet can help you prepare the information needed [Email Mosaic for the spreadsheet: pmp-spreadsheet@mosaicprojects.com.au].  PMI staff then review your application for completeness.

Once your on-line application has been assessed and determined to be complete, PMI will send you electronic notification to submit payment of the credential fee.
This requires you to go back into the on-line certification system to: select your examination delivery method, request any special facilities, and submit payment.

After making your payment, your application will either be randomly selected for PMI's Audit process or you will receive your examination scheduling instructions.

After receiving your email advising your candidate details, scheduling your examination is straightforward. All eligible candidates can quickly and easily schedule, cancel and reschedule their certification examinations on-line at www.2test.comPlease note it is critical that your name used in the application process exactly matches on the government issued identification that you will be presenting to access the testing center.  Address variations on your government issued ID do not matter, only the name.

Following registration, candidates must take their examination within the twelve-month eligibility period. One extension (or a refund) is possible but costs and conditions apply, details are contained in the Certification Handbook.

*The processing sequence for paper based application is different, payment should be included with your application.

Notes
  1. We recommend using the on-line application process - the forms in the handbook provide a useful reference before making your application.

  2. IF there is any conflict between the summary information contained on this page and the detailed information contained on the PMI web site, the PMI information takes precedence.

  3. This information is provided to assist PMP examination candidates to understand their obligations, it is not necessarily up to date or accurate.

  4. All PMP forms are copyright of PMI.

Delivery Options

Mosaic’s Mentored Email™

Mosaic's self-paced Exam Prep is designed for individuals who work most effectively at their own speed. The information needed to pass your examination is provided in 16 modules of ‘Mentored Email’™ based learning for PMP candidates.

Each module includes the delivery of reference materials, followed by test questions and feedback on the answers provided. The three components of each module are designed to work together to reinforce the student's learning. As the course progresses, questions test the student's knowledge of previous modules as well as the current one.

Regular feedback is provided to each trainee showing their overall score against each of the topics. This helps highlight areas of strength and areas needing more study. Mosaic's email based support service is available to help trainees with any questions they may have and to provide additional guidance as needed.

The course materials build into a comprehensive manual for revision and future reference. As part of the course fees, Mosaic provides a complete index system and, within Australia, binders to store the printouts from each module.

Passing your examination requires skill in answering PMI's multiple choice questions - the 400+ questions included in each course provides all of the practice needed to hone your skills and maximise you chance of success (and if 400 questions are not sufficient, you then have a 30 day licence to use our PM Final on-line exam simulator).

Individual students will complete the whole course using this delivery option, in their own time and at their preferred pace of working. Where groups of people can be organised (eg via a PMI Chapter or within a business), Mosaic's 'Blended' courses may be preferred.

Note:- All email courses require the trainee to have access to an email system capable of receiving 'locked' PDF and Excel files (the 'lock' prevents alterations - printing is always enabled).

[View PMP Mentored Email course plan] or [see more on the Mentored Email option]

Blended PMP  (Corporate groups only - minimum numbers apply)

Mosaic's 'Practical' courses use a carefully structured ‘Blended’ delivery system designed to optimise classroom time and the overall learning process. Workshop days at the beginning and end of the program are complemented by a number of weekly cycles of ‘Mentored Email’™ based learning. This combination of face-to-face and self-paced learning offers the ideal combination of delivery options for mature students as well as providing a very time effective solution for busy people needing to balance career development with work pressures and a social life.

The 'Introductory Workshop' is a full day. This workshop is designed to set the scene and develop group rapport for the balance of the course. The day is used to teach some key topics that benefit from the use of a white board and face-to-face instruction including critical path analysis (CPA) and Earned Value as well as allowing the group’s mentor and trainees to get to know each other.

During the 'distance' component of the course, modules are forwarded on a weekly basis.

An email based support service is available to help trainees with any questions they may have and to provide additional guidance as needed.

The course materials build into a comprehensive manual for revision and future reference. As part of the course fees, you are provided with a complete index system and (within Australia) two binders to store the printouts from each module.

A mid course support day (3 Hrs) in included with some courses, this session helps to reinforce the group and provide a friendly place to ask questions and discuss topics of interest.

Revision and a trial examination are included in the last day. This session rounds out the course and facilitates any last questions and discussion points prior to the trainees sitting their examination. The other major advantage of the last day is to set a deadline for the completion of the self-paced component of the course, we know this helps many of our students to wrap up their learning!

Passing your examination requires skill in answering PMI's multiple choice questions - the 400+ questions included in this course provides all of the practice needed to hone your skills and maximise you chance of success (and if 400 questions are not sufficient, you then have a 30 day licence to use our PM Final on-line exam simulator). Mosaic's email based support service remains available to help trainees with any last minute questions before their examination.

Note:- All email courses require the trainee to have access to an email system capable of receiving 'locked' PDF and Excel files (the 'lock' prevents alterations - printing is always enabled).

Mosaic’s Intensive Courses

Mosaic's 'Intensive' courses are designed for managers in a hurry -

On an Intensive course, you will undertake a complete PMP Exam Prep course in 5 days! Courses start on Monday and finish on Friday. There are 7 contact hours scheduled for each day (plus lunch and refreshment breaks) and additional reading is required each evening (a paper copy of the PMBOK is essential).

You will be working hard, but if you can stand the pace all of the information needed to pass the PMP examination will be yours within a week.

Each day includes a small test exam, several modules of training plus some group an individual exercises to help break up the intensity of the sessions. The final day includes a complete revision session plus a trial examination.

As part of your course, you are provided with a comprehensive manual including a complete index system. The manual is essential for revision and for future reference. The only compromise made in designing the intensive course, compared to our longer blended course, is the number of questions you will answer during the course. However, if you feel you need more practice you still have access to a 30 day licence to Mosaic's PM Final on-line exam simulator.

After completing these course, we recommend taking your PMI exam within the next month for the best chance of success. Allowing a few days for revision beforehand will ensure you are ready and confident to apply all you have learnt. Our email support service will assist with any questions you may have during this period.

Our 'Classic' course covers the same material at a more structured pace, courses typically ran at one day per week or one day per fortnight and requires 5 days at 7 Hrs each to complete. The pace of this course allows time for additional questions and investigation of topics of interest to the group making it particularly suitable for 'in-house' training.

Course Design

This course is designed to include ‘just enough’ material to achieve our target benchmark and for you to pass the PMP examination. Our benchmark is for people achieving 80% in this course to score around 70% in their PMP exam (roughly a 10% safety factor).  No one outside of the PMI exam area knows the exact makeup of the current question pool (this is updated monthly) or the current reference sources beyond the PMBOK used for developing questions (although we have a good idea of the key reference texts).  Developing a ‘complete course’ covering all of the possible topics would at least double the amount of work you need to do (and the cost of the course) for no additional benefit; as one successful candidate pointed out: ‘when it comes to the exam anything over 61% is wasted effort’.

We are continually adapting and updating the
course contents to keep them aligned with the current PMP exam as it is evolving
