End
of an Era
From
the start of FY
2011/12 Mosaic Project Services Pty Ltd will be
operating it training business independent of the PMI Melbourne
Chapter.
There
are a number of reasons for this decision, primarily a looming conflict
of interest issue. At the end of June, we will be signing a contract
with the Chartered Institute of Building to develop and market a series
of scheduling courses for the new CIOB
scheduling certifications,
starting with the PTMC (Project Time
Management Certificate).
We
do not consider it appropriate or possible to remain an integral part
of the PMI Melbourne Chapter’s training program whilst at the
same time
we are promoting a certification from another organisation across the
Asia Pacific region.
Mosaic will continue as a PMI
Approved R.E.P.,
continue to offer its range of courses for PMI credentials, and
continue to support PMI internationally and we wish the Chapter every
success in the future.

PMI PgMP
Examination Update
PMI are in the
process of finalising
changes to the Program Management
Professional (PgMP) examination with a targeted release of the new
examination on 1st March 2012, last day for the current exam is 21
January 2012.
PMI have recently completed an
updated Role Delineation Study (RDS) and as a consequence, the three
evaluations for the PgMP credential, the panel review, the examination,
and the multi-rater assessment, will be updated to reflect the very
significant changes in the RDS.
Program
Managers who are considering taking the exam in the near term are
encouraged to complete their PgMP examination in the next few months
using our current resources.

and (of course) scheduling.

CAPM
Exam Application Enhancements
PMI
has made it
easier for candidates to prepare and schedule the CAPM examination.
PMI
and Prometric have
expanded the
network of test centres available
for the CAPM exam to approximately 5000 world-wide. This will make
accessing a centre much easier, in Australia the available centres have
increased from 2 (Sydney and Melbourne) to over 30 centres including
all capital and many regional cities. The complete
list can be found at www.prometric.com.
Also, instead of having to have completed 23 hours of project
management
education at the time of application, candidates now have
the option of submitting their application in advance with a scheduled
date for the completion of the training. Upon submission of the CAPM
application all candidates
must agree to the PMI Code of Professional Conduct and that all 23
contact hours of education will be completed prior to their
scheduled examination date. This will allow candidates to
complete their booking before starting an intensive classroom course.
The number of CAPM credential
holders world-wide is increasing rapidly, these changes will make
booking and sitting for the exam much easier.
Theses
changes only
apply to the CAPM exam, there are no changes in the PMP requirements or
centres.

PMI
PDU
Changes
From the 1st March 2011, the PDU system will be updated. The
changes will impact all individuals who currently hold an active
PMP®, PgMP®, PMI-RMP®, and/or PMI-SP®
credential.
The key changes to the program include:
- Simplification
to the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) category structure,
reducing the number of categories from 18 to 6
- Ensuring
that all categories use the rule that one hour of learning activity is
equivalent to one PDU
- Expanding
the categories to include Web 2.0 learning opportunities
- Adding
limits on certain categories to require that all credential holders
pursue project management continuing education as part of maintaining
their credential
All
current
PDUs will remain valid, the major change is restricting the total
number of PDUs earned or reported after the change in the categories
associated with ‘Giving Back to the Profession’.
The maximum PDUs (in combination) for ‘Creating New Project
Management Knowledge’ (ie, presenting papers),
‘Volunteer Service’ and ‘Working as a
Professional in Project Management’ are capped at 45 got PMP
and PgMP holders and 20 for PMI-SP and PMI-RMP holders. The good news
is you have between now and 1 March 2011, to report existing PDUs in
the CCR system under the current PDU categories. After 1 March 2011,
you will need to report PDUs using the new categories and the new
limitations will apply.

more
information see: New PDU
Category Structure

PMP
Exam Update
The
PMP®
examination will be updated on the 31 August 2011.
- Exams taken before
31
August 2011 will use the same study materials as today.
- Exams
taken on 31 August 2011 and after will require new study materials
aligned to
the updated PMP Examination Content Outline.
Approximately 30%
of the
PMP exam content will change as a result of
changes made to the PMP Role Delineation Study (RDS). This change will
be implemented through existing items being updated as appropriate, new
examination items being developed to meet these requirements, and old
items which do not meet the criteria being retired.
PMI conducts a Role
Delineation Study (RDS) every five to seven years,
for each of its credentials based on the role in project management the
credential serves. The RDS for the PMP has just been completed and PMI
are now preparing operational improvements and communications to keep
PMI key stakeholders informed of what the RDS is and how it affects
them.
The major change
resulting
from the RDS is that the Professional
and Social Responsibility
content area (Domain 6) will now be tested in every domain rather than
as a separate domain on the examination. The recognition obtained
through the RDS is that professional and social responsibility is
integrated into all of the work of project management. Consequently,
PMIs Code
of
Ethics and Professional Conduct
should be viewed
as now
integrated into the day-to-day role of a project manager, emphasising
its importance in each phase of the project lifecycle.
Some
key points:
- There will be no
change in
the PMP eligibility requirements.
- There
will be no change to A
Guide to the Project Management Body of
Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)
the 5th Edition is scheduled for
publication in Q4 2012 with the PMP and CAPM exams scheduled to change
mid 2013.
- From
31st August, PMI will update the PMP application to require candidates
to track and report their hours for each domain (Process Group) within
the RDS, not the individual activities. Open applications will be
automatically converted.
- Results
for the new examination will not be known for several weeks. PMI will
be updating its examination reporting processes and validating the
results. The reporting of pass/fail information in the exam centres
should resume by mid October. All candidates who take the PMP
exam
during September and early October should be advised of their results
by mid-October.
- Existing
PDU and CCR requirements remain unchanged for PMP holders
– you keep the PDUs you have earned. PMI are reviewing the
results of the RDS to determine whether it requires updates be made to
the PMP Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program in the
future. See
more on the CCR and PDU system.
- Mosaic’s
PMP course materials have been updated for the new exam.

Dr.
Lynda Bourne
has been elected President of the PMI
Melbourne Chapter
for the 2010 / 2011 year. To manage the potential conflict of interest
between Lynda's role as Chapter President and the commercial
relationship between PMI Melbourne and Mosaic for the delivery of
classroom based training in Melbourne the following changes have been
implemented:
- Within
Mosaic, Lynda has resigned from the position of Director of Training
(this work is now undertaken by Patrick Weaver). Lynda's new role as
Director of Professional Services focuses on executive coaching,
mentoring and consulting with organisations particularly focused on
OPM3 maturity assessments and process improvement. Lynda will
still
conduct training as an employee of Mosaic.
- Within PMI
Melbourne, management of the training portfolio and commercial
arrangements between the Chapter and Mosaic will be managed by the
Director of Professional Services (as now), reporting to the Vice
President.
Lynda's primary commercial interest remains developing her stakeholder
management business and marketing the Stakeholder

New
Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) System
PMI
is replacing the existing system that manages data and processes for
the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) with a new solution
developed and maintained by PMI. The new System is designed to provide
an easy-to-use graphical interface as the entry point for credential
holders that will deliver a more seamless, improved customer experience.
The
new CCR System will be implemented beginning 25 August 2009. It will
handle all of the functionality that the current system manages in
addition to introducing new efficiencies. These improvements will
ensure that PMI keeps pace with the needs of the growing number of
credential holders.
Credential
holders
will find it simpler and more efficient to:
-
Select activities (courses/events)
-
Report PDUs - View transcripts
-
Maintain multiple credentials
The
new CCR System is incorporated into PMI’s single sign-on
technology
enabling system users to log in only once to gain access to all PMI
systems and avoid the inconvenience of responding to additional prompts
and entering additional passwords.
The
improvements are definitely needed, as at 31st July, PMI membership has
exceeded 300,000 and there were over 370,000 current credential
holders. The
breakdown of statistics is:
-
PMI
membership: 306,111 – an overall increase of 11.2% for the
year.

PM
Final Exam Prep Tool
2008 was a record year for the PM
Final
on-line question bank. Globally, the number of new students increased
an amazing 166% in 2008, and the total number of practice exams
completed increased an even more impressive 213% over 2007.
Mosaic has used PM Final
as a
core part of its PMP courses and as a adjunct to is CAPM courses for
several years and we're pleased to see others following our lead.

Changes
to our PMP and CAPM Training Courses for 2009
Mosaic’s
Mentored Email™ courses for 2009 have been re-priced to
manage the transition to the PMBOK®
Guide 4th Edition.
From
Jan 1st our PMP course will be priced at AU$1200 (plus GST for
Australian residents) - approximately US$850*, and our CAPM course will
be AU$900 (plus GST for Australian residents) - approximately US$650*.
These
price changes are primarily to separate the 10% Australian GST
component from our price structure. We are attracting an increasing
number of clients from the USA, SE Asia and Europe and we do not have
to pay GST tax on these sales.
The increase in the base price is to
cover the costs associated with converting the courses from the current
PMBOK® Guide 3rd Edition to the 4th Edition. Courses started in
January
and February will be based on our current 3rd Edition materials. Both
courses will be available to trainees starting in March, April and May;
their selection will depend on their planned exam date (the PMP exam
changes on 1st July, CAPM on 1st August). After June we would
anticipate only offering the new 4th Edition course.
We
believe our PMP and CAPM courses are still exceptionally good value.
The materials are developed in-house by Mosaic’s experienced
team of Dr.
Lynda
Bourne and Patrick
Weaver.
We develop the materials, administer the Mentored Email™
courses and
importantly, provide the one-on-one mentoring to help trainees pass
their PMI credential examination. We know the courses work, in 2008
only one trainee needed to ask for our free assistance to help them
prepare to re-sit their examination.
You can see how the training
works for yourself by registering for a course; you to receive Module 1
free of charge, and only pay the invoice for the course if you decide
to continue.

Time
is NOT money,
a conversation with Keith
Pickavance
The
Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) conducted a survey of the
construction industry’s knowledge and experience of different
methods of project control, and time management, record keeping,
monitoring and training. One of the key people driving the report and
the on-going work by CIOB to develop a 'Best Practice' standard and
scheduling certification in Keith Pickavance, CIOB President and
Keynote speaker at PM Asia 2008. Read 'Time
is NOT money', a conversation with Keith Pickavance'

background on this initiative. Mosaic will also be supporting the CIOB
work developing its scheduling 'Best Practice Standard' for additional

Differences
between the Third and Fourth Edition of the
PMBOK®
Guide
The
fourth edition reflects a focus on improved consistency and clarity.
Redundant
information was removed and clarifying statements added where needed.
The
PMBOK® Guide - Fourth Edition continues the tradition of
excellence in project
management with a standard that is easy to understand and implement.
The
major
differences between the Third Edition and the Fourth Edition are
summarised below:
- All
process names are in a verb-noun format.
- Efforts
were made to distinguish between Enterprise Environmental Factors and
Organizational Process Assets.
- A
standard approach for discussing requested changes, preventive actions,
corrective actions and defect repairs was employed.
- The
processes decreased from 44 to 42. Two processes were deleted, two
processes were added and 6 processes were reconfigured into 4 processes
in the procurement knowledge area.
- To
provide clarity a distinction was made between the project management
plan and project documents used to manage the project.
- The
distinction between the information in the Project Charter and the
Project Scope Statement was clarified.
- The
process flow diagrams at the beginning of chapters 4-12 have been
deleted and replaced with data flow diagrams.
- A
data flow diagram for each process has been created to show where
information comes from as an input and where it goes to as an output.
- A
new appendix was added that addresses key interpersonal skills that a
project manager utilizes when managing a project.
A
complete
list of changes can be found in Appendix A of the Fourth Edition.

The
major differences between the current and the Second Edition of the
Standard for Program Management ?
The
most significant difference between the First edition and the Second
Edition is in the development of program-specific knowledge areas.
These included knowledge areas that are critical to successful program
management as well as knowledge areas that are significantly different
at a program level than at a project level.
A second
significant difference between the two editions was in the removal of
"themes" that were introduced in the first edition.
- The
theme of
Program Stakeholder Management was expanded into a knowledge area.
- The
theme of
Program Governance was significantly expanded and also became a
knowledge area.
- The
theme of
Benefits Management was incorporated into the body of the document.
Of
special note is that there are three areas: Cost Management, Quality
Management, and Human Resource Management, that were determined to be
better discussed at the project level rather than at the higher program
level as stand-alone knowledge areas. These areas reference the PMBOK® Guide
- Fourth Edition.

Errors
in the PMBOK Guide 3rd Edition
There
are a number of minor errors in the PMBOK Guide 3rd Edition that
have been corrected by two Errata sheets. Depending on the print run,
you may need both sheets, or just the second sheet. The first Errata
sheet pertains to the first printing of the book (or CD-ROM) only. The
second errata sheet pertains to all printings up to the fifth
printing.
In order to determine the print run of your book, refer to the bottom
of the copyright page (which precedes the Notice page and Table of
Contents). You will see a descending numerical string of numbers
beginning with 10. The first printing of the PMBOK(R)
Guide—Third Edition will show the numerals 10 through 1. With
each subsequent print run, the lowest numeral is removed from the
string. Therefore, if your copy of the PMBOK®
Guide—Third Edition has all 10 numerals, you have the first
printing and you will need both errata sheets.

CBT
Testing Available Across Australia
Thomson
Prometric are upgrading the delivery of the PMP and CAPM examinations
across Australia. To date the only locations where Computer
Based Testing (CBT) has been available is Sydney and Melbourne.
People in other locations had to either take a 'paper based'
exam or fly. Paper based exams also required a 6 to 9 month
lead time to organise and needed either the local PMI Chapter or a
business to sponsor them.
The
new
CBT delivery planned for Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth will
only require a month's lead time to organise and a committed group of
10
people. Once the exam has been set up, any other interested
person will be able to book into the session.
These
new arrangements will be progressively rolled out through the balance
of 2007 and should result in a significant number of new test options
for prospective PMP and CAPM exam candidates through the latter part of
this year and into 2008.
Mosaic's Mentored
Email™ clients around Australia will benefit from the
additional
examination options. Commercial clients and Canberra training
course
clients will generally be able to arrange for a CBT exam at the end of
the 30 day period for using our PM Final on-line exam simulator.
